Google can check out inside the chat. Your custom site is not enrolled

Around 22 September, Shopify merchants got mail: products can be bought inside Google AI Mode and Gemini, and eligible stores are on by default. Search Engine Land covered it. If you want the sale to finish on your own domain, you turn Agentic checkout off yourself. Shopify’s help currently talks about US stores selling to US customers, plus Merchant Center. Follow the live admin and Google’s notice; do not assume a global default.

Most of the Taiwan firms we build for are custom PHP, their own payment contract, not that US Shopify plus Merchant Center path. A Buy button inside the chat does not appear on your domain because the news is loud. A custom PHP shop is not one widget away either: catalogue, stock, tax, shipping and a payment path the protocol can read — and you have to want the sale to finish in the chat. Without that checkout protocol and a bank-side channel, a “buyable” line on your site or in a chat is only copy. The buyer cannot finish the payment by pressing it.

The guest is still asking about size or spec, and Google’s chat checkout already asks for an address and a card on the same screen. The stock figure has to be what the warehouse can ship right then, the shipping fee has to be the amount you will actually charge on that order, and whether cash on delivery is offered has to come from your admin settings. The model must not invent those three. Orders, refunds and invoices usually stay with the merchant, not with the chat window. Before you turn that channel on, ask Shopify, the payment provider and Google who is merchant of record, which rail the money uses, what the buyer sees when it fails, and whether the complaint comes back to the store or to the platform. On our payment jobs the delay is rarely whether we can draw a submit button. It is whether the bank merchant contract is signed, whether 3-D Secure is live, and whether a failed charge returns to the cardholder, sits as an authorisation, or stays in transit.

Cash on delivery, ATM virtual account numbers and convenience-store payment codes are common on Taiwan sites. Google’s chat checkout usually has no matching method for those three, so the chat cannot offer them the way your site does. If the site takes most orders on those three rails, the page, the ads and the support replies should not tell a buyer they can purchase inside a Google chat. A company assistant sits on the same line: if a payment method is not switched on in the payment admin, and success and failure have not been tested, the assistant must not tell the buyer it can take that payment.

If you are on Shopify and the US store notice is real, the store admin opens Agentic / Google in Shopify admin and decides whether buyers may check out inside the chat. If you do not want the sale to finish in the chat, the admin turns that channel off. Do not treat “we never replied” as “it is off.” On a custom site whose payments you contracted with the bank yourself, product names and stock still come from your system. This news does not hand them to Google. First let your own checkout finish one order: the stock on the page matches what the warehouse can ship, the shipping fee at checkout matches what you will charge, and the page for a bank decline or a timeout says whether the card was not charged, the authorisation will be voided, or the buyer should not pay again. If someone asks “can they order inside ChatGPT?”, the person who answers the form or the email names the channels you actually have, such as card or transfer on your own site, and does not promise a button you have not connected. Integration: services. Confirm-before-write: the assistant note.

Two scenes that match

Someone forwards the news and asks: “Will Google start selling our site too?” Check the platform and the country before you change any copy. If you never received that US store notice, and you are not an eligible Shopify store as Shopify describes it, this news does not put a Buy button for your domain inside the chat.

The other scene is a checkout page whose submit button already presses, while the bank merchant contract is not back yet. That screen should not say “order placed.” A model writing the code or the copy is happy to add that sentence, because the sentence is easy to write. It does not mean the bank has accepted the charge. If a chat or an assistant shows “buyable” and the card then fails, the buyer thinks the order exists, and you cannot point at a normal checkout failure page to show where the money stopped. The assistant must not get ahead either: until the payment method is actually commissioned, it must not tell the buyer that this assistant can take the money.

FAQs

We use Shopify in Taiwan. Are we on?

The public rules currently describe US stores selling to US customers, plus Merchant Center. The store admin should read Shopify admin and the notice from Google. Do not assume a Taiwan store is switched on by default.

What does a custom PHP shop need?

A plugin on a custom site does not enroll you in Google chat checkout. Catalogue, stock, payment, tax and shipping all have to be readable by their checkout protocol, and you have to be willing to let that sale finish inside the chat. For most small firms, the practical step is to make their own site checkout work from order, to payment, to the failure page.

If a guest pays in the AI UI, who owns the dispute?

Orders, refunds and invoices usually stay with the merchant, not with the chat window. Before you turn that channel on, ask the platform and the payment provider who is merchant of record, which rail the money uses, and what the buyer sees when it fails.
