Search your own brand. Check what the overview says

On 1 October 2026 Search Engine Land wrote up a DemandSphere set: branded queries they track showed AI Overviews on about a quarter of them early in September, then near 90 percent on 27 September, and still above 80 percent at month end. The piece says Google did not announce a change. It is one sample, not every brand on earth. Read it as “brand queries now often get a paragraph,” not as a new rank formula.

A brand query is someone who already knows your name and wants to confirm who you are, where you are, and what you do. A wrong district, a wrong trade, or a phone number you never published is a bigger problem than “were we cited.” People contact the number they see, or they write from that paragraph. If it does not connect, they decide the firm is not there. We already separated a citation from a form fill. This note adds a narrower case: even a search for your name can show a paragraph you did not write, above the links.

The person who owns the site can tell whether this overview is about you with two private-window searches. Once for the registered name, once for the short name or the spelling clients actually type. Read the first sentences for an address, a mismatched industry, a phone, or a LINE ID. We do not publish a phone. If a number appears, that number is wrong, or it was lifted from an old page. It is not how we ask people to write now. Then see whether the blue link under the overview is your site. If the link is yours and the sentence is wrong, edit the page that sentence was copied from. Do not retitle the page to chase the brand query. A new title also does not promise that query will move forward.

The sentence usually comes from your homepage, service page, or about page, plus maps, directories, and old news. You can edit your own pages. The first screen should state the base and the work: Taipei Zhongshan, Fuxing North Road, sites, back offices, payments, LINE AI, Taiwan-wide, contact by form. If the district or the phone in the overview disagrees with the page, first find which page the wrong line was copied from. If it is your service page, edit that sentence. If it is a map or a directory, sign into that listing and edit it there. Changing the homepage does not wipe an old file on someone else’s site. What you can do first is put the correct base and the work on the first screen, so a later overview has a correct line to copy.

Search Console, at this point, is for impressions and clicks on the brand query, not for the wording inside the overview. A person reads that wording on the result page. If brand clicks fall, check whether the paragraph already said who you are, so people did not need to click, or whether the average position actually moved back. Our September export already showed dozens of impressions on the romanized name and almost no clicks, and impressions with a weak position on “台北網站建置.” That table already had this shape before branded overviews became this common. Do not treat the October jump in overviews as the cause of the September table. How we read it: impressions without clicks.

Once a month, by the same person, is enough. They do not need to search every day. They paste the first paragraph of both searches into a note: the date, which sentence was right, which sentence was wrong, and which URL the blue link was. If the wrong sentence is on your service page, edit that sentence. If it is on a directory, edit the directory, and make the correct address on your about page harder to miss, so a later overview has a clear line to copy. The service page carries what you do, what you refuse, and how to write. Structured data should repeat only what a person can see. A “brand monitoring” retainer will not correct a wrong district. It will send you another screenshot.

Two searches that match the job

On Monday the person who owns the site opens a private window and searches the Chinese name. If the overview names a district other than Zhongshan, or prints a phone number, it disagrees with the page. What we publish is Fuxing North Road in Zhongshan, contact by form, and no public phone. Log that error in the week’s note, and search again next month to see whether the overview now matches the page. Do not replace the homepage slogan the same afternoon because of that paragraph.

The other picture is a smaller case, and often it is not your brand at all. Sales forwards a phone screenshot of some other company’s name under a long overview. Ask them whether the string on the screen is that firm’s brand or a generic query. A generic overview already mixes many firms into one paragraph. If your name is not in that paragraph, do not edit your homepage from this screenshot. Leave it in the note marked “not our brand query,” and stop there.

Questions

Does a brand overview mean we lost rank?

Do not read it that way. The overview is a block above the blue links. Whether your URL is still there, and what the average position is, is a Search Console question for that one brand query. Do not decide the position moved back only because the overview sits on top of the link.

Should we rewrite the site because of this?

No. Fix the sentence the overview gets wrong: the address, what you do, what you do not do, and how a person writes to you. A full-site rewrite does not clear a stale address on someone else’s directory. That listing is fixed by signing into that directory, not by publishing another page on your site to cover it.

Has an overview misstated ZhuYun?

You only know after that search. Last month’s export cannot promise this month’s paragraph. The September export only shows impressions on the romanized brand and few clicks. A person still has to open the result and read the overview.
